The mailing list still wins.

Every platform you post on is rented land. Your mailing list is the only audience nobody can take away from you. In 2026, with organic reach on Instagram under 4%, a 3,000-person warm list is worth more than a 30,000-follower dormant account.

Watch: Email marketing for artists! How to start and build an email list

How to actually collect emails

At every merch order (mandatory field, not optional). At every show — a physical clipboard on the merch table still works. In the pinned comment of your top TikTok. In your Linktree, above the streaming links. Guestlist request forms. Every touchpoint.

The monthly note

One email a month. Written in your voice — first person, second person, real sentences. What you're working on, what you're listening to, one photo from your phone, and one clear thing you want them to do (pre-save, book a ticket, share a link).

Tools

Buttondown or Beehiiv for the writing-first feel. Mailchimp only if you need heavy automations. Never use your DSP's default fan email tool — the deliverability is poor and you don't own the list.

Segmenting

Two tags is enough for most indies: 'superfans' (bought merch or a ticket in last 12 months) and 'everyone else'. Send announcements to everyone; send pre-sale windows, signed pressings and secret shows to superfans only.
